Mustang Culture and Education Centre
His Holiness Menri Trizin and Geshe Sonam’s vision is to re-establish the vibrant Bonpo community that once flourished here in Mustang. Geshe Sonam has established the Mustang Cultural Education Center (MCEC) to make this vision a reality. The journey to realizing the fruit of this vision requires many steps. Bon culture and spiritual traditions must be re-built from the foundations, beginning with providing a cultural center for the community, then educating the children in their traditions, and finally creating the Bon religious and ritual support for Mustang Valley.
In exchange for stabilizing the farming system and resolving the water shortages with the implementation of a well-driven irrigation system developed and constructed for the local farms in the Pangling region of Mustang, the local farmers have agreed to allow the local children to attend boarding school in Jomson, Nepal at Geshe Sonam’s MCEC. The next and final step in the fruition of this vision is the building and establishment of a monastery local to the area as a center for the spiritual life of the community.

Successfully Completed Projects

Successful completion of the Cultural Center in Pangling
In June of 2014, the MCEC completed construction of a Cultural Center in the heart of Pangling, Nepal, on land donated by the community. Inauguration ceremonies were held in August with community leaders, Geshe Sobnam and donors.
The Cultural Center will be a platform to preserve, share and pass on traditional farming methods; to sustain weaving, shoe-making and other art of clothes-making; to continue traditional painting and wood carving practices; to practice indigenous folk medicine; and to learn indigenous music, singing and folk dancing to celebrate local festivals, e.g. harvest and the new year. This Cultural Center would also serve as a local gathering place for contact between younger and older villagers in such a way that a wide range of cultural practices would be sustained and passed on from generation to generation.
